Smith Gets Wrecked in Budweiser Shootout
February 12, 2011
Regan Smith's first Budweiser Shootout ended early as the Furniture Row Racing driver got collected in a multicar accident on Lap 29 of 75 at Daytona International Speedway.
The backstretch melee in Saturday night's non-points race sent six cars to the garage, including Smith's No. 78 Chevrolet plus the cars of Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, Juan Pablo Montoya, Joey Logano and Kevin Conway. .
"It was getting feisty out there and I am not exactly sure what happened," said Smith, who was credited with a 22nd-place finish. "Our crew chief (Pete Rondeau) said that the No. 88 (Earnhardt Jr.) got into me. But I have a feeling somebody tagged him first. As I said, I am not really sure what happened.
"The one thing I do know is that I was having fun and felt we were getting a better hang of the situation before we got wrecked. The first segment (25 laps) I was not able to hook up with someone in the draft and make it work. I hate crashing a car, but it was still good experience as we continue to work on our strategy for next week's Daytona 500 (Feb. 20)."
The next go for Smith at Daytona Speedweeks is tomorrow's (Sunday) Pole Day qualifying, which locks in the front row for the 500 and also determines the starting field for Thursday's (Feb. 17) qualifying races.
The Budweiser Shootout winner was Kurt Busch. Rounding out the top five were: Jamie McMurray, Ryan Newman, Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle.
