March 14, 2014
Martin Truex Jr. will start 29th in Sunday's Food City 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
In Friday's first of two qualifying sessions at the half-mile oval, Truex's best lap in his No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet SS was 15.067 seconds at 127.351miles per hour. The 12 fastest drivers advanced to the second and final round.
Truex entered qualifying as the ninth fastest driver in the earlier practice session.
"The car was loose going into the corner and loose coming out of the corner," said Truex. "It's too bad we couldn't back up our practice effort, but at this short track if you're off just a tick you pay the price. And that's what happened to us today.”
The pole winner was Denny Hamlin (14.761 at 129.991). Rounding out the top-10 in order were: Brad Keselowski, Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano, Marcos Ambrose, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman and Kasey Kahne.
Sunday’s race will be televised on FOX, beginning with a prerace show at 10:30 a.m. MT (12:30 p.m. ET).
