Smith Qualifies 17th in Martinsville
March 31, 2012
Regan Smith will start 17th in Sunday's Goody's Fast Relief 500 Sprint Cup Series race.
In Saturday's time trials at the historic Martinsville Speedway, Smith's No. 78 Furniture Row/CSX Play it Safe Chevrolet covered the .526-mile short track in 19.684 seconds at 96.200 miles per hour.
"We were looking for a better starting spot," said Smith. "We just didn't have the rhythm you need at this place. You have to hit every mark precisely. If you don't, you pay a big penalty for one little hiccup. The difference between the pole and 17th is approximately two-tenths-of-a-second."
The pole winner was Kasey Kahne, whose lap time/speed was 19.496 at 97.128. Rounding out the top-five in order were: Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer and Ryan Newman.
Sunday's 500-lap, 263-mile race will be televised on FOX, beginning with a 30-minute pre-race show at 10:30 a.m. MT. (12:30 p.m. ET).
