Smith Qualifies 28th in Arizona
April 9, 2010
AVONDALE, Ariz. (April 9, 2010) -- Regan Smith will start 28th in Saturday evening's Subway Fresh Fit 600k NASCAR Sprint Cup race.
In Saturday's time trials at Phoenix International Raceway, Smith's No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet toured the one-mile oval in 27.182 seconds at 132.441 miles per hour.
"The good news is that we made a pretty good gain from practice," said Smith. "I know that Ryan (Coniam, crew chief) and the guys will look over all the data this evening and come up with a game plan for tomorrow's race. If we can make a similar gain when the race starts, I feel that we'll be in good position."
The No. 1 qualifier was AJ Allmendinger (134.675 mph) -- his first career pole. Rounding out the top five in order were: Scott Speed, Sam Hornish Jr., Marcos Ambrose and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Saturday's 375-lap race will be televised on FOX, beginning with a prerace show at 5 p.m. MT (4 p.m. local time). The green flag is scheduled to drop at 5:45 p.m. MT (4:45 local).
