Smith Qualifies 6th in Talladega
April 25, 2009
TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 25, 2009) -- For the second week in a row Regan Smith secured a top-10 qualifying performance. In Saturday's time trials at Talladega Superspeedway, Smith earned a sixth-place starting position for Sunday's Aaron's 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup race.
Driving the No. 78 National Day of Prayer Chevrolet for Furniture Row Racing, Smith covered the lengthy 2.66-mile oval in 50.964 seconds at 187.897 miles per hour -- not far off Juan Pablo Montoya's pole speed of 188.171.
"A strong effort and another great job by the Furniture Row guys," said Smith about his best starting position of the season. "Our first mission was to qualify the National Day of Prayer car. Now that we've accomplished that goal, our next objective is go out there tomorrow and produce a strong finish. We need to be patient and attack at the end."
Also for the second week in a row, Smith was the fastest among the drivers who needed to qualify on speed.
The Furniture Row team has qualified in all five races that it has entered in 2009.
Sunday's race will be televised on FOX, beginning with a prerace show at noon local time (11 a.m. MT).
