Regan Smith Qualifies 15th in Richmond
April 27, 2012
Regan Smith will start 15th in Saturday night's Capital City 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Richmond International Raceway.
In Friday's early-evening time trials, Smith's No. 78 Furniture Row/Farm American Chevrolet covered the .75-mile short track in 21.225 seconds at 127.208 miles per hour. It was Smith's best qualifying effort since posting a sixth-place starting spot in Bristol, Tenn. in mid March.
Smith's time was less than two-tenths-of-second (.185) slower than Mark Martin's pole-winning time of 21.040.
"It's so close out here that you can't even afford a small hiccup," said Smith. "I probably underestimated the grip for our car and that hurt. But overall it was a solid effort by this Furniture Row/Farm American team. We've struggled at the last four races in qualifying and it's nice to get back on track. Now we have to go out there and produce in race conditions."
Starting behind Martin and making up the top-10 in order are: Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick, AJ Allmendinger, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Saturday night's race will be televised on FOX, beginning with a 30-minute prerace show at 5 p.m. MT.
