Regan Smith qualified 23rd for Saturday night's SHOWTIME Southern 500 Sprint Cup race at Darlington Raceway.

In Friday's time trials, Smith's No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet covered the 1.366-mile oval in 27.647 seconds at 177.871 miles per hour.

Due to wet weather in Darlington, the first practice session was cut short while the second session was canceled.

"The weather played havoc for all the teams today," said Smith. "We were focused on race trim and really never got dialed in with our qualifying setup because of the lack of practice time. We have a good race car and I am looking to improve upon our 17th-place finish we had here last year."

The pole winner was Kasey Kahne (181.254 mph). Rounding out the top-five in order were: Ryan Newman, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards and Jeff Gordon.

Saturday night's race will be televised on FOX, beginning with a prerace show at 5 p.m. MT.
