Truex Jr. to Start 15th in Coca-Cola 600
May 22, 2014
A clutch last-minute run to fourth at the end of the first qualifying session Thursday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway sent Martin Truex Jr. and the rest of the Furniture Row Racing team into the second round with a good chance at making the 12-car final round.
Leaving pit road in the second round with about two minutes remaining in the session, Truex had the No. 78 Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet SS hunting the top-12 when the car wiggled entering Turn 3.
The lap at 192.438 miles per hour was good enough for a 15th starting spot Sunday in the Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR's longest race of the season (400 laps, 600 miles). In the final practice session of the day, Truex logged the fifth-fastest lap of the session.
“I got in too fast in (Turn) 3,” Truex reported from the cockpit after the second round of qualifying. “Tried to get too much.”
Jimmie Johnson won the pole with a lap at 194.911 miles per hour in his Chevrolet, his first of the season and in the new qualifying format.
Brad Keselowski ran second in a Ford, with the Chevrolets of Kasey Kahne and Danica Patrick and Clint Bowyer’s Toyota rounding out the top five. Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Marcos Ambrose and Dale Earnhardt Jr. completed the top 10.
Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 will be telecast by FOX Sports beginning at 4 p.m. MT. Radio coverage by the Performance Racing Network and Sirius/XM begins at the same time.
