June 22, 2012
Regan Smith will start 31st in Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350, the first Sprint Cup road race of the season.
In Friday afternoon's qualifying session at the road course in Sonoma, Smith's No. 78 Furniture Row/Farm American Chevrolet toured the 10-turn, 1.99-mile circuit in 76.979 seconds at 93.064 miles per hour.
"No doubt, we have some work to do before Sunday," said Smith. "But the good news is that we did get better towards the end of today's practice. Our goal is to continue that improvement in tomorrow's two practice sessions and get this Furniture Row/Farm American Chevy dialed in for the race."
The pole winner was Marcos Ambrose (95.262 mph). Rounding out the top-10 in order were: Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle, Martin Truex Jr., Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman.
Sunday's race will be televised on TNT, beginning with a 60-minute prerace show at noon MT (11 a.m. local time).
