Smith Qualifies 24th for Sonoma Road Race
June 24, 2011
Regan Smith will start Sunday's road race at Infineon Raceway from the 24th position.
In Friday's time trials, Smith's No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet toured the 10-turn, 1.99-mile road circuit in 77.851 seconds at 92.022 miles per hour.
"We lacked some grip and that's all it takes to drop down in the field," said Smith, who entered the event with the season's No. 1 qualifying average. "I was comfortable with the Furniture Row Chevy in race trim during today's practice, and we'll do more fine tuning in tomorrow's two practice sessions."
Smith will be starting his fifth career Cup road race and his third at Infineon Raceway.
"It's all about experience and I feel that we're getting closer to having a breakthrough performance on a road course," explained Smith.
The pole winner was Joey Logano (93.256 mph). Rounding out the top-five in order were: Jamie McMurray, Paul Menard, Denny Hamlin and Ryan Newman.
Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350, the first of two Cup road races of the season, will be televised live on TNT. The one-hour preace show begins at noon MT.
