Smith Qualifies for Indy Race
July 25, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS (July 25, 2009) -- After some anxious moments that weather might cancel Sprint Cup time trials Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the skies slowly turned from gray to partly cloudy, which gave Regan Smith the opportunity to qualify for Sunday's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.
Had the rain persisted and qualifying canceled, Smith and the Furniture Row Racing team would not have been part of Sunday's prestigious event at the fabled 2.5-mile oval.
But under ideal conditions at mid afternoon, Smith qualified his No. 78 Chevy Impala SS with a lap time and speed of 51.073 seconds at 176.218 miles per hour. He will start the 160-lap, 400-mile race from the 36th position.
"The lap was not as good as I would have liked it to be," said Smith, who has qualified in all 11 Cup races he has entered in 2009. "The Furniture Row Chevy was good in turns three and four, but not as fast in one and two. Considering that it looked like we would be going home this morning because of rain, we'll take the starting position and work our way to the front."
The pole winner was Mark Martin (182.054 mph). Rounding out the top five in order were: Juan Pablo Montoya, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Bill Elliott and David Reutimann.
Sunday's race will be televised on ESPN, beginning with a prerace show at 11 a.m. MT (1 p.m. ET).
