Nemechek Battles Obstacles in Watkins Glen Road Race
August 10, 2008
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (Aug. 10, 2008) -- Joe Nemechek experienced an up and down day as the Furniture Row Racing driver finished 38th in Sunday's Sprint Cup road race at Watkins Glen International.
Adding to the disappointment was Nemechek's involvement in a nine-car accident with eight laps remaining.
Though he continued to drive the heavily damaged car after a 40-minute red flag, NASCAR directed the team to bring the car to the garage with one-lap remaining.
"Our car got torn up pretty good," said Nemechek. "That was a nasty wreck out there. What's tough about that is everybody is on the gas coming off the corner hard. Then all of a sudden two guys got turned sideways. When that happens you can't stop quickly. We all kept piling into each other."
Track position was a major obstacle for Nemechek, who started the 90-lap race from the 41st position due to qualifying being canceled Friday because of rain.
"We tried a number of things to gain some track position, but nothing seemed to go our way," added Nemechek. "The Furniture Row Racing Chevy Impala SS was pretty good, but overcoming poor track position was a big hurdle today."
The next stop for Nemechek and the No. 78 team will be next week at Michigan International Speedway.
