Matt Crafton, subbing for Furniture Row Racing driver Martin Truex Jr., qualified the team's No. 78 car 39th during Friday's time trials at Michigan International Speedway.
Truex was with his longtime partner and girlfriend Sherry Pollex, who underwent surgery today for ovarian cancer.
"Whenever you step into something new it takes time," said Crafton. "However, it was a great experience and I was happy to help out the team. I personally want to extend my heartfelt thoughts to both Sherry and Martin."
Crafton, the reigning NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion, will compete in Saturday's truck race at MIS.
Craftton's Sprint Cup qualifying speed on the 2-mile oval was 197.466 miles per hour.
