Strong Qualifying Run Will Have Truex Jr. Starting 6th at Atlanta Motor Speedway
August 29, 2014
Martin Truex Jr. put together a solid qualifying effort and will start sixth in Sunday night's Sprint Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Truex advanced to the third and final qualifying round, and his sixth-place showing was his best since the season opening Daytona 500 when he qualified on the outside pole.
"It’s been a good day overall," said Truex following Friday night's qualifying session. "We really needed it. We haven’t had a good day like this in quite a while. The guys built a brand new car to come here and I am proud of them for their effort. This is the kind of day we needed to get things turned around. It’s funny how smooth things go when the car is working well."
Truex's No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet, with the World Vision paint scheme, recorded a lap time and speed of 29.346 seconds at 188.918 miles per hour.
The pole winner was Kevin Harvick. Rounding out the top-10 in order were: Brad Keselowski, Kyle Larson, Ryan Newman, Matt Kenseth, Truex, Aric Almirola, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne.
Sunday night's Oral-B USA 500 will be televised on ESPN, beginning with a 30-mimute prerace show at 5. p.m. MT (7 p.m. ET).
