Smith Qualifies 28th in Talladega

October 6, 2012

Regan Smith will start 28th in Sunday's Sam Roadside Assistance 500 Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway.

In Saturday's time trials, Smith's No. 78 Furniture Row/Farm American Chevrolet toured the 2.66-mile oval in  50.582 seconds at 189.316 miles per hour.

"The focus during Friday's practice was on race-trim conditions, and we were very pleased with how the Furniture Row/Farm American Chevy performed in the draft," said Smith, who was seventh fastest in the initial practice session. "Regarding qualifying at Talladega, it's the same old story -- it really doesn't matter where you start.  Though we have a car that has the potential to contend for a win, you need some luck here to avoid the always anticipated wrecks."

The pole winner was Kasey Kahne (191.455 mph).  Rounding out the top-10 in order were:  Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards, Trevor Bayne, Martin Truex Jr. and Sam Hornish Jr.

Sunday's race will be televised on ESPN, beginning with a 60-minute prerace show at 11 a.m. MT. (noon Talladega time).
