Truex Jr. Qualifies 16th in Michigan
June 13, 2014
Martin Truex Jr. will start Sunday's Quicken Loans 400 from the 16th position.
In Friday's Sprint Cup Series time trials at Michigan International Speedway, Truex advanced to the second round of qualifying. His No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet covered the 2-mile high-speed oval in 35.853 seconds at 200.820 miles per hour.
"We had a good shot at advancing to the final round but got bumped during the last minute of the second qualifying session," said Truex, who was 11th fastest in practice. "Overall our Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet is good, but we need to work on getting the car to turn better in Turns 1 & 2. We have two practices tomorrow to work on that issue. We're looking forward to a strong run on Sunday and to continue our recent momentum. Having a solid performance on Father's Day would be pretty special since it was my father who was a huge help in launching my career."
The pole winner was Kevin Harvick with a time and speed of 35.198 at 204.557 mph. Rounding out the top-10 in order were: Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Aric Almirola, Paul Menard, Brad Keselowski, Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Joey Logano and Brian Vickers.
Sunday's race will be televised on TNT, beginning with a 60-minute prerace show at 10 a.m. MT (noon ET).
