Truex Jr. Furniture Row Team to Start 25th in the Cheez-It 355 at the Glen
August 9, 2014
In what came down to a race between cooling down and heating up, Martin Truex Jr. put the Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet 25th on the grid for Sunday’s Cheez-It 355 at The Glen.
On the 2.45-mile Watkins Glen International circuit, qualifying is split into two sessions, not three, so you have to be quick in the first session. The team ran one lap in the early part of the session and came in to see what everyone else did.
Cooling down the engine and the tires all the while, the team’s second lap came at the 16-minute mark, and it was good for 24th on the board.
Cooling and waiting a second time, crew chief Todd Berrier sent Truex out for the final rush with less than two minutes remaining in the session. At the end of the lap, Truex was 25th at 127.245 miles per hour and missed the final round of 12.
Jeff Gordon won the pole for Sunday’s race, nipping new track record holder Marcos Ambrose with less than 3 minutes remaining. Ambrose, whose lap of 129.491 miles per hour in the first session set the 16th track record of the season for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will line up second.
Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch rounded out the top five, with AJ Allmendinger, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Newman completed the top 10.
The Cheez-It 355 at The Glen is slated for a 1 p.m. EDT (11 a.m. MT) start on Sunday and will be televised by ESPN.
