Truex Qualifies 15th in Arizona
March 13, 2015
Martin Truex Jr. qualified 15th for Sunday's Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway. He will start on the inside of Row 8 alongside Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Truex advanced to the second round of qualifying Friday, but fell three positions short of making the final cut of 12 drivers.
“Not real happy, obviously," said Truex. "We wanted to make it to the last round at least. We were off a little bit in practice. We were kind of experimenting with a new package for us on short tracks. Just never could quite get it right. In hindsight we probably should have bailed on it earlier, but we wanted to give it a true effort and we did that. We were pretty far off the first round. We made some big adjustments after the first round and then we ran twice in the second round and got faster each time. We just didn’t have enough and really fought being tight in (Turns) three and four.”
When asked how hard is it to move up through the field at the 1-mile oval, True said, "It’s not hard. We will be fine. I think we started 14th in the fall race here and were fifth before the first pit stop.”
The qualifying time and speed posted by Truex's No. 78 Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet were 25.921 seconds at 138.884 miles per hour.
Truex enters Sunday's CampingWorld.com 500 fourth in driver points after posting three consecutive top-10 finishes to start the season.
The pole winner was Kevin Harvick (25.577 at 140.751). Rounding out the top-12 in order were: Joey Logano, Jamie McMurray, Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman, Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, Austin Dillon and Kyle Larson.
Sunday's race will be televised on FOX, beginning with a 30-minute prerace show at noon PT (1 p.m. MT).
