Truex Jr. to Start 3rd in Saturday Night’s Texas Race
April 8, 2016
Martin Truex Jr. tied Joey Logano for second in Friday’s Sprint Cup qualifying but will start third in Saturday night’s Duck Commander 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. The tiebreaker was based on season owner points.
Though he had his sights on the pole after posting the fastest in speed in Thursday’s practice, the third-place starting position is the best of the season for the single-car Furniture Row Racing team.
In the three-stage qualifying session at the 1.5-mile oval, Truex’s No. 78 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Toyota was fifth fastest in the first stanza and sixth in the second. In the money round both Truex and Logano posted a lap time and speed of 27.935 seconds at 193.306 miles per hour.
“I felt like we had a shot at the pole today, but the No. 19 Toyota (Carl Edwards) put down a heck of a lap in the final round,” said Truex. “We also made a good run in our Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Camry. We just missed it a little bit on the balance. I thought we were really good yesterday in practice but the track got a little faster today. Up next is race-trim practice and we’re looking to be just as strong.”
The pole winner was Carl Edwards (27.748 at 194.609). Rounding out the top-12 in order were: Logano, Truex, Chase Elliott, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Brad Keselowski, Matt Kenseth, Austin Dillon, Jimmie Johnson and Trevor Bayne.
Saturday night’s race will be televised on FOX, starting with a 30-minute prerace show at 5 p.m. MT (6 p.m. local).
