Truex Jr. Qualifies 12th in Talladega
April 30, 2016
Martin Truex Jr. will take the green flag to start Sunday’s Geico 500 from the outside of Row 6 as a result of posting the 12th fastest qualifying speed Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway.
Truex, driving the No. 78 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Toyota Camry, advanced to the second and final round of qualifying after posting the 10th fastest speed (191.623 mph) in the first round at the 2.66-mile oval. His time/speed in the final session was 49.984 at 191.581.
“Considering we didn’t make a qualifying run yesterday in practice I was pleased that we made it to the top 12,” said Truex. “I wasn’t really sure that we were going to make the top 12, but the guys made it happen, giving me a strong Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Toyota. I feel we’ll also be strong in the race. Our plan is to run up front and stay there. As we all know that’s where you need to be during the closing laps. One little hiccup you can get shuffled back in the pack real quickly. Those closing laps are always exciting here.”
The pole winner was Chase Elliott (49.704/192.661). Rounding out the top-12 in order were: Austin Dillon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Paul Menard, Kasey Kahne and Truex.
Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race will be televised on FOX, starting at 11 a.m. MT (noon local time, 1 p.m. ET).
