Nemechek, No. 78 Team Fall Short in Qualifying
May 22, 2008
CONCORD, N.C. (May 22, 2008) -- After a solid practice session Thursday at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Joe Nemechek's No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet could not get up to speed in the evening's Sprint Cup qualifying session. The perplexing performance resulted in Nemechek not qualifying for Sunday's Coca-Cola 600.
"The front tires chattered and we don't understand why," explained Nemechek. "Something happened and we don't know at this point why the car did what it did."
Nemechek's Chevy Impala SS covered the 1.5-mile oval in 30.061 seconds at 179.635 miles per hour. He needed to run a time of 29.760 to qualify.
In the afternoon practice session, Nemechek was the third fastest among the 13 cars that needed to qualify on time.
"After today's practice we never dreamed that this would happen," offered Nemechek. "We were ready and felt we had everything right. But something went awry. It's such a fine line of making the show or going home early. This is a good team and we'll bounce back."
The next stop for the Furniture Row Racing team will be at next week's Sprint Cup race in Dover, Del.
