Regan Smith Qualifies 7th for Pocono Cup Race
June 9, 2012
Regan Smith posted his sixth top-10 qualifying effort of the season, claiming the seventh starting position for Sunday's Pocono 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race.
In Saturday afternoon's time trials at the newly-paved Pocono Raceway's 2.5-mile track, Smith drove his No. 78 Furniture Row/Farm American Chevrolet to a lap time and speed of 50.517 seconds at 178.158 miles per hour.
"We're pleased with the qualifying lap and feel that we certainly gained some ground here this week, including the two days of testing (on Wednesday & Thursday)," said Smith. "In race trim we don't have the speed as some other cars, but we're consistent with our speed, which is good but need to keep the consistency. We're overdue for a strong finish and Pocono could be the place for it."
The pole winner was: Joey Logano (179.598 mph). Rounding out the top-10 in order were: Carl Edwards, Paul Menard, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Mark Martin, Smith, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Marcos Ambrose and Kasey Kahne.
Sunday's race will be televised on TNT, beginning with a 60-minute prerace show at 10 a.m. MT (noon ET).
