Truex Jr. Qualifies 9th in Michigan
June 12, 2015
Martin Truex Jr. recovered from a slow start in Friday's time trials as he went on to qualify ninth fastest for Sunday's Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan International Speedway. It was his fifth-straight top-10 qualifying effort.
After posting the third fastest speed in the earlier practice session at the 2-mile oval, Truex's brand new No. 78 Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet fell off pace in the first round of qualifying, ranking 17th out of 44 cars.
With the top 24 drivers advancing to the second round, Truex needed an extra qualifying run to make the final group of 12. He did accomplish the mission, recording the 11th fastest speed. The final session turned out to he his best, qualifying ninth with a time and speed of 35.896 seconds at 200.579 miles per hour.
"We made some adjustments for qualifying guessing on what the track was going to do," explained Truex . "It seemed like it was getting hotter outside and then the clouds came back. We just missed it -- we were too tight. We spent every run trying to free the car up. The last run was the best , which is always what you want. But we were still a little bit too tight at the end. Good adjustments by the guys and a good recovery for sure. We had to go twice in the second round; that is usually not a good thing, but here the tires really seem to get faster as you run, so it didn’t hurt us. Wish we could have gotten a little more, but a top-10 we will take it.”
Capturing the pole was Kasey Kahne (35.645 at 201.992). Rounding out the top-12 in order were: Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Ryan Blaney, Jeff Gordon, Austin Dillon, Jimmie Johnson, Truex, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano and Matt Kenseth.
Sunday's race will be televised on Fox Sports 1, 11 a.m. MT (1 p.m. ET).
