Lack of Practice Costly for No. 78 Team at Chicagoland

July 12, 2008

JOLIET, Ill. (July 12, 2008) -- A lack of practice time due to an engine issue proved costly for Joe Nemechek, who finished 39th in Saturday night's Sprint Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway.

During the first of two practice sessions on Friday, the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet suffered an engine failure at the 1.5-mile oval. The team worked nonstop to replace the engine but due to a short window between practice sessions, it was unable to get back on the track.

"We just never had any time to work on a race setup and it showed tonight," said a disappointed Nemechek. "We virtually had no data to go on, and in the end, it became a crap shoot. When that happens the result is usually not very good. And this race was even more difficult because we started in daylight and ended in cooler night conditions. It's disappointing for everyone at Furniture Row Racing because we had momentum coming into this race."

In the previous five races the No. 78 team showed improvement at each event, including a season-best finish of 18th last week at Daytona International Speedway.

"We had some obstacles to overcome tonight and we know that we're better than what we demonstrated," said crew chief Jay Guy. "I am confident that we'll rebound at Indy."

Speaking of Indy, that will be the site of the next Sprint Cup race -- the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, July 27 at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Sprint Cup Series has next weekend off.
