Smith Qualifies 27th for Brickyard 400
July 30, 2011
A problem in Turn 4 at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway spoiled Saturday's qualifying run for Regan Smith, who will start 27th in Sunday's Brickyard 400 Sprint Cup race.
Smith, driving the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet, covered the 2.5-mile oval in 49.744 seconds at 180.926 miles per hour.
"Turn 4 killed the run, I didn't get the speed that was needed in that corner," said Smith, who was 11th fastest in qualifying-trim practice. "Based on practice, we were looking for a much better starting position than 27th. I guess that means we're going to have to work a lot harder to get our Furniture Row Chevrolet to the front. While I am disappointed in our qualifying performance I feel good about how well we practiced in race trim."
The pole winner was David Ragan (182.994 mph). Rounding out the top-five in order were: Kasey Kahne, Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski.
Sunday's race will be televised on ESPN, beginning with a 60-minute prerace show at 10 a.m. MT.
