Regan Smith will start 22nd in Sunday's Sylvania 300 Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

In Friday's time trials at the 1.058-mile oval, Smith's No. 78 Furniture Row/Farm American Chevrolet recorded a lap time of 28.633 seconds at 133.021 miles per hour.

"We were looking for more than where we finished," s aid Smith, who was third fastest in the day's only practice session. "Everything has to work perfectly -- you can't even afford a slight hiccup during a qualifying lap on this track. We didn't do what we wanted, but we'll be ready for Sunday."

The pole winner was Jeff Gordon (134.911 mph). Rounding out the top-10 in order were: Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart, Brian Vickers, Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, Paul Menard, Ryan Newman, Martin Truex Jr. and Dave Blaney.

Sunday's race will be televised on ESPN, beginning with a 60-minute prerace show at 11 a.m. MT ( 1 p.m. ET).
