Truex Jr. Qualifies 15th For Saturday Night's Sprint Cup Series Race
October 8, 2015
Martin Truex Jr. will start 15th in Saturday night's Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
In Thursday night's time trials, Truex survived the first round after making a pressure second qualifying lap late in the session, which lifted him from 27th to 17th. He went on to record his best lap in the second session, but fell three positions short of reaching the final 12.
Truex's No. 78 Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet covered the 1.5-mile oval in the first round with an elapsed time and speed of 28.362 seconds at 190.396 miles per hour. His second round numbers were 28.264 at 191.056.
“We just guessed wrong on the track," said Truex. "We thought it was going to go one way and it went the opposite. Our first run we were kind of caught out and had to make big adjustments. Of course you have another run on your tires than everybody else. We made good gains, and our last run was by far our best, just that extra run on tires really hurts you.”
The pole winner was Matt Kenseth (27.759 at 194.532). Rounding out the top-12 in order were: Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Greg Biffle, Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Aric Almirola, Ryan Newman, Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Saturday night's race will be televised on NBC (not NBC Sports Network) 5 p.m. MT (7 p.m. ET).
