Martin Truex Jr. was among the top speedsters Friday as he qualified eighth for Sunday's AAA Texas 500 Sprint Cup Series race at the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway.

Truex was 18th fastest after the first round, 11th after Round 2 and then in the final round he drove his Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet to a lap time and speed of 27.218 seconds at 198.398 miles per hour to claim the eighth starting position. It was his best effort since qualifying sixth during the Labor Day weekend race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

"Great start to the weekend," said Truex. "We had a good practice today (fourth fastest) and a solid qualifying run. The guys made good adjustments all day to keep us in the game. We missed it just a tiny bit on the last run. We need to keep it going during the two practices tomorrow and then perform on Sunday. It's all systems go for Furniture Row Racing."

The pole winner was Matt Kenseth (27.095 at 199.299). Rounding out the top-10 in order were: Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, Truex, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano.

Sunday's race will be televised on ESPN, beginning with a 60-minute prerace show at noon MT (1 p.m. CT).
